Tonight I read "The Shipman's Tale" and not going to lie it was pretty good! Basically, what the story was about was, a merchant and his social butterfly of a wife were losing their money because the merchant was throwing his money away on his wife's wants. Then, the merchant met a 30 year monk, Dan John, who claimed to be his cousin and the monk helped him with his money situation. Later on, you come to figure out that the wife tell's the monk , "My husband is the worst man towards me that ever was since the world was made."(125 Chaucer) The monk tell her they aren't cousins and then they have a love affair.
The monk later takes francs from "his cousin" to "...buy certain animals to stock one of our places."(127)Which he ends up giving to the wife. Then they have an affair again while the merchant is away, and the merchant finds out! Of course haha, but he ends up forgiving his wife!
I really actually enjoyed this tale it was my favorite I think. It was just a good story line and it's something that seems like is becoming a typical scenario happening in relationships today- when someone gets bored of who they "love" they just move on to someone else secretly. Sneaky if you ask me! I was in shock that the merchant forgave her though, if that were me I'd say seeee yaaaaa.
